Distance Reiki, also known in English as “the absent treatment” and in Japanese as enkaku chiryô hô, is a wonderful alternative to in-person Reiki sessions. It’s perfect for people who are home-bound, hospitalized or geographically remote. Distance Reiki offers the same powerful healing benefits as in-person treatments, and can be received at your convenience from home, the office, or during travel.
Distance Reiki Treatments
Distance Reiki is based on the same energy transfer principles as in-person Reiki. However, it uses a specific technique to bridge time and space between practitioner and receiver. Here’s how this multi-step energy transfer works:
Preparing for the treatment
Before beginning a distance Reiki session, it’s important for both practitioner and receiver to set aside a time for the treatment, and ideally to find a calm and relaxing place for the therapist and client to conduct the session. Usually a conversation will take place on the phone or by Zoom to discuss what the client would like to work on in their treatment.

- Practitioner: Once the practitioner has the information s/he needs to perform the session, which usually includes a photo and the name and location of the recipient, the treatment can begin.
- Receiver: The recipient needs to find a quiet, comfortable place where s/he can relax during the session. Laying down or lounging in a comfortable chair are both ideal for the treatment, And of course if the client needs to use the restroom or go to the kitchen during the session, its completely fine to get up for a short time. However it is recommended to stay relaxed and receptive as much as possible during the treatment.

Using Reiki symbols
Reiki symbols, which are taught in Reiki Level 2, play a crucial role in long-distance treatments. There are several symbols in Reiki practice, each with a specific meaning and purpose. At the beginning of the session, the practitioner will use these symbols to form a connection across time and space with the recipient.
Establishing the energetic connection
Once the symbols have been activated, the practitioner uses intention and concentration to establish an energetic connection with the recipient. This connection is usually made by visualizing the recipient, most often using a photograph and the recipient’s name as a reference. Visualization plays a crucial role in this process, enabling the practitioner to direct the energy with precision.
Sending healing energy
Once the connection has been established, the practitioner begins to send healing energy to the receiver. This can be done in a variety of ways, depending on the practitioner’s preference, in what is called a “formal” or “informal” absent treatment. Both forms of treatment work well, but the practitioner will choose which to use based on the issues the client wants to address.
Wrapping up
At the end of the session, the sender and receiver usually talk again for a few minutes. Often the recipient has some experiences or insights they want to share. The Reiki therapist may sometimes have impressions or suggestions for the receiver on how to continue integrating the healing energy into their daily life.
Science and Distance Reiki
Although distance Reiki is a spiritual and energetic practice, there are interesting parallels with certain scientific theories. Modern science, particularly quantum physics, has explored concepts that can help explain how distance Reiki might work.
- “Quantum entanglement” is a phenomenon hypothesized by Albert Einsten and later proven in 1964 by John Stewart Bell in which two particles become linked in such a way that the state of one instantly affects the state of the other, no matter how far apart they are. Although quantum entanglement is generally observed at subatomic levels, it offers an intriguing analogy for understanding how healing energy could be transmitted at a distance in Reiki. Albert Einstein referred to Quantum Entanglement as “Spooky action at a distance.” (More details here.)
- Furthermore, the “theory of morphic fields” proposed by biologist Rupert Sheldrake, suggests that invisible fields interconnect all living beings and influence their behavior and development… According to this theory, Reiki practitioners could tap into these fields to send healing energy at a distance, thus entering into a universal connection that transcends space and time. (More details here.)
Conclusion
Distance Reiki offers a powerful and flexible method of energy healing, accessible to everyone, regardless of location or time constraints. By transcending the barriers of space and time, Reiki enables practitioners to work with the client’s energy in a deep and meaningful way.
